What to Clean for Cold and Flu Season

Fall brings warm fires, gorgeous colorful leaves, holiday gatherings, and so many things to celebrate and be thankful for. Unfortunately fall also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. Family and friend gatherings, coupled with cooler outside temperatures create a perfect scenario for germs to spread. As colder weather approaches there are several things you can do in your home to help minimize the spread of germs. Let’s look at some household cleaning projects that can help minimize your exposure to cold and flu germs.

Points of Contact

One of the biggest things you can do this season to prevent the spread of germs in your home is to stay on top of regularly cleaning “points of contact” in your home. These points of contact are breeding grounds for germs because they are touched frequently, and often ignored during routine cleaning. Points of contact include things like doorknobs, light switches, railings and drawers. These things that are touched countless times a day need to become a priority during cold and flu season, because germs primarily transfer via hand contact. In addition to these things around your house, be sure to thoroughly clean telephones, computer keyboards, remote controls, and similar items that are used frequently and rarely cleaned.

Filters

Another important cleaning/home maintenance item to consider and take care of during cold and flu season is your HVAC filter. While a dirty filter may not cause you to get a cold or the flu, it can harbor dirt and dust that can cause allergies and irritation making you more susceptible to germs. Checking and replacing an HVAC filter should be done periodically anyway, so the fall is a good time to check that and take care of it if need be. In addition, be sure to clean air vents and fans to rid them of unnecessary dust and dirt that can likewise cause irritation and allergies.

What Supplies to Use

While cleaning points of contact in your home is important, it could be all for not if you aren’t using the proper cleaning products. Particularly during cold and flu season it is especially important to use a cleaning solution with disinfectant and wipe down the area thoroughly. Not all cleaning solutions are created equal, and during the fall and winter when germs run rampant it is especially important to use a powerful disinfectant.
